The FCNL building, originally constructed during the Civil War, had serious structural problems, outdated systems and significant maintenance concerns. The reconstructed building provides the Quaker organization with increased space and a safer working environment which is handicapped-accessible and incorporates “green” architecture and building materials. Modern renovations made the space fully barrier free and building code-compliant, with wiring appropriate for future developments. The green architecture features of the reconstructed building include photovoltaic panels, radiant floors, and a “green vegetated” roof. Thirteen geothermal wells were drilled over 300 feet deep to provide a supply of water at constant temperature to create more efficient heating and cooling. FCNL achieved Silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2007.
